inspiration
in a lot of my work i am dealing with perceptions, and views of the world, which actually relates quite well to the whole topic of inspiration. seeing things in different ways can lead to a great many ideas, and sometimes a simple shift in the perception of an everyday object can lead to an exciting piece.

one example of a form of inspiration can be seen in the 'walking man' series in the MoDe section of the site. although there is currently only one finished piece posted from this series, the idea behind the whole series was triggered simply from passing an everyday street sign while walking to get groceries in beijing in the summer of 2004.

often times the inspiration behind a piece is even more abstracted than the 'walking man' example. sometimes simply catching the glimmer of light refracting through a glass of water can lead to a series of thoughts that develop into something much different.

there are also times when simply closing my eyes and laying back can lead to visions and ideas that turn into pieces. the piece 'alone in a sea of grass' in the MoDe section is an example of one of these.

the 'one moment in life' series in the video section is an excellent example of how inspiration can be born. that series is about the observation of everyday encounters and how perceptions can alter their meaning. the same works for inspiration, as there is immeasurable beauty, often quiet and humble in display, constantly surrounding us, it simply takes a mindful eye to see many ideas in something often taken as dull.

there are also other ways that ideas can arise. one way that i often find the concept behind a piece is through travelling in music. by relaxing and closing my eyes while listening to music it becomes possible to be absorbed into the feeling of that music. once inside that world, ideas almost generate themselves and the journey the music takes me on can lead to the entire vision of a piece.

sometimes the energy of a certain place can also be a trigger for ideas and pieces. it is almost like there is something in the air in some places of the world that generates ideas, and things just seem to pop into my head. a lot of the illustrations on the pages of this site are a result of this.

the philosophies and beliefs in the world are also a great source of inspiration. the teachings of experience and thoughtful insight offer many opportunities for the development of art, and often the art itself can be a way to express philosophical ideas.

dreams are also a great source for inspiration. sleep provides a situation when the brain is relaxed and interferes less with the generation of ideas, and as such this is an excellent time for works to be born.

some of the best ideas come from the simple interactions with people i see everyday. sometimes through the discussion of ideas and the concious working towards the concept of a piece inpiration comes. there are other times when the simple actions of the person or a slight inflection in the way they say a word can trigger an entire piece. and sometimes the mere presence and energy of them can be more than adequate to inspire something.
